Mark Driscoll on Legalism and Religion

By in Theology

Great sermon this past Sunday from Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church in Seattle on legalism.  It was very convicting, both for the part of me that is a Pharisee and the part of me that is a reverse legalist.  I’d suggest a download is worth your time.

More press for the New Calvinism

By in Theology

The ‘New Calvinism’ is starting to be talked about more in the media.  Newsweek wrote about the movement back in .  There is the great (short) book Young, Restless, Reformed: A Journalist’s Journey with the New Calvinists by Collin Hansen, and now the Christian Science Monitor takes a good look at one church in Washington, [...]

What is the ‘New Calvinism’ and why does it matter?

By in Theology

I still remember a few of the initial conversations with the first true Calvinist I ever met, he later turned out to be one of my closest mentors.  After that I had to go look up what an Arminian is, since he called me one.  This topic is near to my heart as I am [...]

Sin, Morality and Rational Thought

By in Theology

From Rod Dreher’s excellent and always thought provoking blog: I believe virtue is mostly a matter of habit. This is not to say that reason has nothing to do with morality; obviously there are many dilemmas that require serious moral deliberation before one acts, so there is absolutely a place for reason. My point is [...]

Why we forgive

By in Theology

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.  Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.  And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. How can we truly forgive?

By in Theology

14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14-15 (ESV) When I was a small kid my sister and I did not get on well.  Of course I loved her [...]

The Pain of Sin

By in Theology

Have you ever seen that ‘depression hurts’ commercial? You know the one, with the caring, slightly motherish sounding woman who tells you that depression hurts ‘all over’? Of course, the answer is drugs she nicely adds. Well, it’s funny but that’s how I think of sin. Sin hurts. It hurts all over. I’m sure not [...]

Resting in God’s sovereignty

By in Theology

I grew up in a great church. I really, truly love the people and everything that surrounded my spiritual upbringing. I still have great affection and love for the people I knew then, those wonderful people who sacrificed to significantly contribute to my growing faith. It should stand as a testament to my parents, grandparents [...]

A beautiful demonstration of God’s sovereignty

By in Theology

From Aaron Ivey, one of the worship leaders at my church, comes a great example of how God’s sovereignty can be seen in mighty ways. This is a beautiful story of how the adoption of on of their children came together in just the right way after a long time waiting. It’s worth your time.

John Piper on Sin and Total Depravity

By in Theology

I’ve never thought of sin this way, but as he does often, Mr. Piper completely opened my eyes to something in his short “Ask Pastor John” segment.  It’s a must listen.
