Makoto Fujimura is an outstanding visual artist. His paintings are a fusion of a traditional Japanese style (Nihonga) and abstract expressionism. As someone who loves art of all eras modern styles like abstract expressionism have always presented a challenge for me. Some artists absolutely rock me to the core, like Rothko, whereas others evoke absolutely nothing other than disinterested observation.
After getting to know Fujimura’s work through the Soliloquies project, I can say that I am thrilled to see that he is publishing an illuminated book of the gospels. This is an old tradition that he is bringing into the world of modern art. I remember the first time I saw Rothko’s work in person and I was awestruck. I never understood its power until I could just sit in front of it and absorb the color, vibrance and obvious emotion. Fujimura’s work evokes those same feelings in me, and I think he is a great choice for such a powerful project.
